Background
After completing a two-year Graphic Design course at Eastbourne
School of Art, where my only notable achievement was to be voted
'Rag Prince', I began my advertising career at JWT as a Copywriter
(junior class).
Studying under such luminaries as Jeremy Bullmore and the two
Barkers, Richard and David, I produced my first, and some would
say greatest, published work - cooking instructions on a packet of
Findus Fish Fingers.
Simmer gently on a low flame" was one of mine, you may remember.
The next few years were spent at various London agencies; Wasey's,
Freeman Mathews & Treasure, The London Advertising Partnership,
as well as a stint on 'Sounds' as gig reviewer, illustrator and editor
of the letters page.
Then came a call from Ian Batey to join his agency in Singapore.
I stayed for five years working with Norman Alcuri, Jenny Koch and,
briefly, Neil French.
The first chance I got to run a creative department was at BBDO
Hong Kong where I partnered Art Director Dennis Skouse.
Creative Directorships followed at Euro RSCG and Batey in Kuala
Lumpur, and three years as Executive Creative Director at JWT in
Jakarta.
This period of my career in Southeast Asia resulted in around 50
international gongs for both writing and art direction.
Always ready to accept a challenge (i.e. poisoned chalice), I rashly
followed in the intrepid footsteps of Thesiger, T.E. Lawrence, and
Gertrude Bell and moved (just four months after 9/11) to the capital
of Saudi Arabia.
I prefer to draw a veil over my time as CD for Focus (Euro RSCG) and
Team (Y&R) in Riyadh and Jeddah. All I can say is that never in my
professional life have I worked for a bunch of such venal, duplicitous,
reactionary amateurs.
I hope you enjoy the archive.
